I’ve been trying to get into 3D modeling for a few months now, but every time I sit down to start, I get overwhelmed by the sheer number of options out there. I’m a total beginner with no art background, working on a five-year-old laptop, and I really just need the best free 3D modeling software for beginners that won’t crash every five minutes or require a degree in computer science to understand. I’m doing this mostly as a hobby—I want to design simple game assets and maybe a few small props for 3D printing—so I don’t have any budget for paid tools right now.

So far I’ve tried two things. First I downloaded Blender because everyone says it’s the industry standard, but after spending a whole weekend just trying to navigate the interface and accidentally creating a shape that looked like a squashed potato, I realized it’s way too complex for where I am. Then I tried Tinkercad, which was super easy to pick up—seriously, I made a little spaceship in like twenty minutes—but I quickly hit a wall because it feels like playing with digital LEGOs and I can’t do anything organic or detailed. I also briefly looked at SketchUp Free, but I read that the web version has some weird limits on file exports, or maybe I’m misremembering that.

For anyone else who started from zero and felt stuck like I do now, what was the first program that actually clicked for you? I’m not looking for the most powerful tool, just something with a gentle learning curve that can still let me make things that look decent—something that won’t scare me off before I even get to the fun part.

Have you checked out Sculptris? It's a super user-friendly tool for beginners focused on 3D sculpting. You don’t need to mess with complex modeling like in Blender; you can just push and pull shapes to create figures which is great for organic modeling. It runs fine on older systems, so it might suit your laptop well.
