How can a country justify recognizing a breakaway region as independent?
#1
I’m trying to understand how a country can justify recognizing a breakaway region as independent when it violates the established international borders we’ve all agreed to. It seems like it sets a precedent that undermines the whole system of sovereignty, but maybe there’s a legal argument I’m missing here.

I watched that recognition move and it felt more political than legal to me. People in the country notice the practical shifts first and the theory often comes later.

Legally some argue recognition is a political act that does not by itself redraw borders while others say it creates a new state once enough states accept it. The line between consent and mandate is blurry and enforcement depends on power not just law.

Do you think the real issue is consent from the people on the ground rather than the map on a treaty sign?

I tried to travel through a border area after a recognition and the borders changed in practice before any formal visa rules were updated and local authorities were still sorting it out.
