How can i balance midtones and color transitions in digital illustration?
#1
I’ve been trying to build a consistent color palette for my digital illustrations, but I keep getting stuck on the transition colors between my main hues. My mid-tones either look muddy or they clash, and it’s throwing the whole piece off. I’m wondering if my issue is that I don’t fully grasp color theory for digital blending.

I actually started by testing two mid tones with small swatches next to my main hues and then nudging them toward neutral gray until the balance felt right. The muddy look vanished when I kept changes gradual and noted where each value landed.

I keep thinking about color theory but I still feel stuck. The mid tones always felt like they were fighting the highlights. I tried mixing in a touch of the opposite hue but I ended up losing saturation. Maybe I was chasing a perfect balance and forgot to consider luminance first.

Do you find yourself chasing a universal midtone that works across textures or do you change it per surface?

I set a light to dark scale with three steps and kept the same ratio between the steps for all colors to hold harmony. It helped a lot but the drift came when lighting changed.
