How can I better listen to modern jazz and appreciate the complexity?
#1
I’ve been trying to get into more modern jazz, but I keep hitting a wall where everything just sounds like background music to me. I put on a highly recommended album and my mind just wanders, even though I can tell the musicianship is incredible. Is there a specific way I should be listening to appreciate the complexity, or is it just not for me?

I’ve chased that feeling too. I started by listening for a single motif in a solo and then tracked how the other players nudge around it. suddenly the texture stopped being background and started sounding like a chat at a party.

Sometimes it’s not you, and it’s not the album either. I’ve had albums click after a handful of listens, and other times I still hear mood and texture more than a tune.

I used to listen while cooking or walking, letting the kitchen timer or street noise ride along. The different environment made the space between notes feel real, and I caught little accents I’d missed before. Maybe space matters for you, too.

I carved out three short listening windows and tried to grab whatever stuck—the lick, the groove, or a strange silence—and not try to micromanage the vibe. Do you think the issue is the music, or is it the expectation you bring to it?
