How can i build custom brushes with organic variation in my brush engine?
#1
I’ve been trying to get better at creating custom brushes in my main digital painting program, but I keep hitting a wall where they just feel generic. I watched a few tutorials on procedural texture generation, but I’m not sure how to translate that into a brush engine that has real organic variation.

Tried a brush that uses random seeds and a touch of noise along the stroke and it still comes out too tame after a few passes.

I adjusted spacing and tilt randomness in small steps and watched the streaks blend into something a bit more organic on the canvas, but it still repeats fast.

Maybe the issue is not the brush but the surface and lighting you use for the painting do you think that could be the culprit?

I drifted for a while and ended up layering a couple of textures onto the brush as falloff and it gave a momentary feel that was closer to something alive then I dropped it.
