How can I carve space for each synth pad in a dense mix?

I’ve been trying to get a more cohesive sound when I layer multiple synth pads, but my mixes just end up feeling cluttered and muddy. I’m wondering if anyone has a good approach for carving out space for each pad in the mid-range without making them sound thin or losing their body.

Yeah I’ve tried splitting the mids across pads. I kept one pad’s muddy area around 350 Hz cut with a narrow Q, another pad sat a little brighter around 1 kHz, and I left a gentle shelf at 6–8 kHz so the things still breathe. It took several passes, but the mud eased up without killing the pads' body.

I also used light bus compression on the pad group with a slow attack and release to keep the pads from fighting each other. When the kick hits I duck the mids a touch on the busiest pad, so the kick can poke through.

I keep wondering if the real problem is the room or the reverb build then burying things. Sometimes I solo the pads and hear perfectly clear mids, then in mix it sounds muddy anyway. Not sure if it’s a phase thing or just too many sustain planes.

I tried pan and width to separate them instead of stacking; a little stereo spread on a backbone pad, leave the others center; when that works I find the mids stay legible. I wouldn’t swear it fixes everything though.
