How can i curb inside jokes that derail conversations on forums?
#1
I’ve noticed my online friend group has started using a really specific inside joke to dismiss anyone’s opinion they disagree with, just saying “skill issue” to everything. It feels like it’s shutting down any actual conversation, but I’m worried if I say something I’ll just get hit with the same phrase. Has anyone else felt a tactic like this slowly poison a community’s ability to talk about anything real?

I've seen it in a few groups too. that phrase acts like a quick shield, a way to end a conversation without actually listening. at first it felt like a joke, then it became a reflex whenever someone disagreed—that skill issue line. conversations get trimmed to a string of memes and one word replies, and you start doubting if anyone cares about the real point.

I tried calling it out once, not dramatic, just saying can we talk about why this matters, and I got a chorus of eye rolls. after that, replies got shorter, fewer people engaged, and the group drifted toward safe topics and quick memes.

It feels like a real danger to trust a space where tone policing rules conversations. maybe it's not the joke itself but who benefits when topics stay shallow. I even wandered into a different chat thread to cool off, then realized the pattern followed me back.

Do you think the real issue is the joke or the underlying unwillingness to listen?
