How can i cut our home energy use in half and find the big drains?

I’m trying to figure out if my household can realistically cut our energy use in half this year. We’ve already switched to LEDs and are pretty good about the thermostat, but hitting that target feels daunting without knowing where the big, hidden drains are.

We did a quick audit with plug meters and found the fridge and the hot water heater were the big culprits. Unplugging idle gadgets and dialing the water heater down by a degree or two saved around 40 kWh a month. It added up, but it didn’t feel like a game changer.

The attic was drafty and the ducts felt pinched. After sealing obvious leaks and adding insulation, the furnace ran a bit less in winter. The effect was real, but I still wouldn’t assume it halves the bill.

Water heating still drags us down. Even with a decent thermostat, long showers and laundry cycles push the monthly total higher than I’d like.

We toyed with smart plugs for the media center and a smart strip for the computer desk. It cut standby draw a little, but the energy bill barely moved compared to the weather and cooking days.

Do you actually need half, or is a 30 percent cut more realistic given your climate and how you use hot water?

One weekend I timed the main loads and watched the meter jump when the fridge compressor kicked in and when the water heater fired up. It reminded me that some loads are predictable if you watch them, which makes planning easier but also makes the goal feel arbitrary.

A neighbor switched to a small solar kit and a battery. It gave him a sense of control even if the numbers aren’t perfect yet, which is a weird comfort.
