How can i design scavenger hunt clues that balance the difficulty for all ages?

I’m trying to plan a small community scavenger hunt for our neighborhood group, but I’m stuck on how to make the clues challenging without being impossible for the mixed age groups. Has anyone run something similar and found a good balance?

We did a small hunt last spring for neighbors of all ages. We kept clues tied to local spots and made most hints easy. A couple of clues were a bit trickier and it still felt fair when folks talked through them.

My family tried it and we learned to mix ages on teams instead of sorting by kid or adult. It kept the energy up and nobody felt left out when one clue slowed the group.

I wonder if the real issue is time to enjoy it rather than how hard the clues are.

We once rushed a round and a store closed early so the clue chain broke. After that we kept routes short and used a simple map so it could keep moving.
