How can i dial in my bike fit for a better riding position on long road rides?

I’ve been trying to dial in my riding position for longer road rides, but I can’t seem to get my handlebar reach quite right. I feel either too stretched out and achy in my shoulders or too cramped and putting pressure on my hands, even after adjusting my stem.

I get the ache after long days too. I toyed with a longer stem while leaving saddle height alone, and it let me finish a couple more hours before the shoulders started grumbling.

I swapped to a compact drop for a while and that shifted pressure away from the palms, which helped for a few hundred miles, though my wrists felt odd when I shifted into the drops.

Could it be the saddle fore-aft or bar width rather than reach?

One ride I tried forcing more time in the drops and ended up with neck strain later, so I started wondering if maybe it’s really about overall posture and core endurance rather than just the cockpit.
