How can I ease redness and flaking from a topical retinoid?
#1
I’ve been using a topical retinoid for my acne for about three months now, and my skin still gets incredibly red and flaky a day or two after each application. I expected some initial dryness, but this persistent irritation makes me wonder if my skin barrier is just too compromised to tolerate it.

I’ve been there. After a couple of months the redness and flaky skin would show up the day after I used the retinoid, no matter how little I applied. I tried cutting frequency to once or twice a week, mixing a pea-sized amount with my usual moisturizer, and letting my skin recover overnight. It did help a bit, but the irritation kept flaring up for weeks.

I found that swapping in a ceramide rich moisturizer and a gentle cleanser helped more than trying to push through. I apply the retinoid to dry skin, wait, then lock it in with a thick moisturizer. My skin still felt delicate for a while, but the redness calmed down slowly.

Could this redness actually be coming from something else in your routine or environment—like a different product, a new detergent, or the weather—making the retinoid feel harsher than it would otherwise behave?

I shelved the plan for a while and kept using sunscreen; I still wonder if the barrier repair would ever tolerate the retinoid at all. At this point I’m not sure if the issue is the product or my skin.
