How can I fix stiff countersteering input on fast corners?
#1
I’ve been trying to get comfortable with countersteering on my bike, but I keep catching myself using too much pressure on the bar without really feeling the bike lean. Has anyone else had this happen where the input just feels stiff and unnatural, especially on faster sweepers? I’m wondering if it’s something I just need to relax into or if my technique is off.

I had that exact thing once, the bar felt stiff and my hands clamped down even though the bike wasn’t leaning yet. I tried to relax my shoulders, loosen the grip a notch, and let the bar move with the bike instead of forcing it. Only then did the bike start to lean on its own—that countersteering thing finally clicked for me.

Same here, fast sweepers and I was gripping the bars like a vise. I started working on breathing, keeping forearms light, and waiting a beat before steering. It helped some, but the tension came back if I rushed or stared at the apex.

Could the real issue be your stance or tire grip rather than the technique?

I remember a ride where the sun was bright but the road felt a bit slick. I got tense just thinking about the corner. I slowed down, relaxed the upper body, let the bike lean more on its own, and it happened with less drama than I feared. Not a perfect fix, but it reminded me you don’t have to overthink the input.
