How can i get android auto navigation to display on my car dashboard?

I’ve been trying to get my phone’s navigation to show up on my car’s dashboard display using Android Auto, but it keeps failing to project the map. The connection seems fine for music, so I’m not sure if it’s a setting I’ve missed or a compatibility issue with my head unit.

That sounds painfully familiar. The car would connect for audio but the map stayed on my phone screen. I ended up swapping the USB cable to a thicker, braided one and rebooting both the phone and the head unit; sometimes that would kick the map onto the dash, but it would drop again after a while.

Another thread I chased was permissions and data. When the phone started behaving oddly, I made sure Maps had background data, location access allowed, and that the pairing was trusted. Even after updates, the map would stall if the phone went into a low power state, so I kept it awake for a test run.

When it finally did light up, I noticed a stubborn moment where I didn't get the prompt to start the display. Does the phone show a permission or driving-mode prompt when you connect? If not, you might be stuck in charging only mode and not negotiating the data link.

Could the issue be the head unit itself? I kept worrying it was the phone, but a firmware update from the maker finally stabilized projection for a while. If you can, test with a different car or a different head unit to see if the map shows; it might reveal the real bottleneck.
