How can i get better mid-corner bite with used slicks?
#1
I’ve been running a set of used slicks I got for a great price, but I’m starting to wonder if I’m actually losing time in the mid-corner phase compared to a fresh set. The car feels like it’s just not biting the way I expect, especially on long, fast sweepers.

I ran a used set of slicks for a few weekends and in long sweepers the car never felt like it would bite the way I expected. It was like the grip faded and the mid corner just slid a bit. I went through a couple of sessions, tweaked pressures a touch, and then swapped to a fresh set. The bite came back and mid corner felt more stable, even if the lap times didn’t instantly drop because of traffic.

Maybe it’s not the rubber alone. Heat cycles, pressure creep, balance through the mid corner—all of that can kill the late turn-in if the front grip is fading or the rear goes off early. I noticed with the used tires that on a hot track the edge grip dropped sooner, and the car felt skittish when I started to unwind the wheel. I kept chasing it with small pressure tweaks and still felt the same vibe.

Do you track tire temperatures across the tread with each session?

I tried a quick camber tweak and bumped the pressures in a couple sessions, hoping that would wake the mid corner, but the core issue stayed stubborn. I even swapped to a different, slightly softer compound once, just to see if the grip would settle, but it didn’t feel any better, so I stopped chasing that lead.
