How can i get faster autofocus for candid family photos?
#1
I’ve been trying to get better at capturing candid moments at family gatherings, but I keep missing the shot because my camera’s autofocus is just too slow. I end up with a lot of slightly blurry photos where the expression or gesture I wanted is already gone. Has anyone else dealt with this and found a way to work around it without having to switch to manual focus entirely?

Yep, I’ve been there. In dim rooms my lens would hunt forever. I started locking focus on a single point where I think people will be, then kept shooting as the family moved. It’s not perfect, but I miss fewer moments now.

I started using bursts with a quick shutter and steady hands. Auto ISO kept the light reasonable, and a few rapid frames captured the grin just as it happened. It felt messy, but it worked enough to keep trying.

Maybe the problem isn’t the camera at all. Sometimes the moment slips away before I even press the button. I tried planning or cueing people, and still the emotion is gone. Feels like the timing is the real bottleneck.

I did try a faster lens and pre‑framed on a doorway light once. A couple of shots came out sharp, but luck felt more than skill. Not sure that’s a fix I can count on.
