How can I get synth pads to sit back with mid frequencies and reverb?
#1
I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit further back in the mix without just turning them down. I used a high-cut and some reverb, but they still feel like they’re sitting on top of everything instead of blending into the background. Is there something specific I should be doing with mid-range frequencies or the reverb’s pre-delay to create more depth?

I tried just turning the pad down and it still felt like it was in front. I ended up dipping around 1.5–2.5 kHz by a couple of dB and making the reverb longer and darker with a 28–40 ms pre-delay. The space behind it started to sit back, though not always cleanly.

I keep the pad slightly filtered in the lows and let the mids carry the body; if it still sits on top, I try blooming the reverb tail a bit more and maybe automate a tiny amount of dry/wet, but it doesn’t always help in busy sections.

Are you sure the problem isn't the lead element? I’ve noticed the mix can fool you into thinking the pad is loud when the lead or drums are stealing the space.

I once tried a long analog chorus on pads to widen them and got distracted by the chorus’s own space; it did feel deeper but made the groove slip, so I backed off and focused on a subtle pre-delay and a pale reverb instead.
