How can i guide members to post in the right subforums without friction?

I’ve been running a small hobby forum for a few years, and lately I’m struggling with how to handle members who consistently post in the wrong subforums despite clear rules. Moving their threads feels like I’m policing them, but leaving them misplaced makes the whole place feel messy and hard to navigate. I’m not sure if I should just keep quietly moderating or if there’s a better way to encourage better posting habits without causing resentment.

I’ve run into this too. I started quietly moving threads to the right subforum and leaving a short note so the author sees it. Some folks took it as a rebuke, others shrugged. The forum felt cleaner after a few days, but it was a drag to do repeatedly.

Maybe the issue isn’t the posts but how the spaces are described. If people skim, they post where it seems most relevant. I toyed with soft reminders and clearer labels, and it did slow things down but people still slipped.

Are we sure misposting is the real problem, or is the labeling and navigation the culprit?

I tried to be quiet about it for a while, hoping people would adapt, but the mess piled up. I started a weekly roundup of where things should go and left it at that, nothing dramatic.
