How can i handle insider language in my online group?
#1
I’ve been noticing lately that my online friend group has started using a really specific, almost coded language full of inside jokes and references I don’t get, and it’s making me feel like an outsider in a space I used to help build. I’m not sure if I should just quietly observe until I pick it up or ask them to explain, because calling it out might break the flow or seem like I’m complaining.

I can relate. I felt that vibe when a group kept tossing around inside jokes I didn’t get, and it did make me feel small.

I tried to surface it once with a casual 'what does X mean' and they explained it without making a thing of it, which helped a bit.

Sometimes I wonder if the issue is less the jokes and more that you used to anchor the space and now you’re hearing it as a barrier.

I kept a tiny notebook of the references over a week and then asked one person who seemed friendly; they explained a few and warned me not to overthink it.

I rushed through a couple of memes to feel included and it felt fake, so I stopped forcing it.

If it bugs you, try a light line like 'random meme lesson anyone' and see who bites.

Do you think the real problem is the language or the place you have in the group?
