How can I improve chest activation during push-ups?
#1
I’ve been doing a standard push-up for months, but I can’t seem to get my chest to fully engage; my shoulders and triceps take over almost immediately. I’ve tried adjusting my hand placement and focusing on my mind-muscle connection, but I still don’t feel that deep burn in my pecs. Has anyone else struggled with this specific activation issue?

Yeah I’ve been there. I felt the pushup was all shoulders and triceps as soon as I tried to go deeper. I started pausing at the bottom, kept elbows tucked a little, and tried to squeeze the chest hard at the top. It helped a bit, but the burn still showed up mostly in the front delts, not the pecs.

Then I played with incline to get a chest signal first and slowly moved the angle down. I did slow tempo reps too—three seconds down, a tiny pause, then up. After a few weeks I finally felt the chest kick in when my elbows were about 45 degrees. Still not perfect, but better.

I added some chest work outside pushups—dumbbell floor presses and a couple sets with a band to wake the pecs. The feeling translated back to pushups a bit, but I still felt the shoulders light up early on hard sets.

Could the real issue be something else like how you’re positioning your scapula or your neck and head? I kept thinking it was chest but it seemed to hinge on bracing. Not sure if that’s your problem, but it changed the game a little when I focused on scapular control.
