How can i keep core forum members engaged without alienating newcomers?
#1
I’ve been running a small hobby forum for a few months, and I’m starting to notice that a handful of the most active members are forming a sort of inner circle that makes newer people feel like outsiders. I want to keep that core group engaged because they post great content, but I’m worried the community feels cliquey and isn’t growing because of it.

I had a similar vibe a while back. It felt warm when the regulars were around, but new people stopped posting because they felt watched rather than welcome. We started a monthly 'introduce what you're into' thread and a few shy folks jumped in. Not a magic fix, but it helped a bit.

Honestly I tried a soft nudge once, asked a couple of the most active folks to poke at new threads in the first week, and watched engagement shift for a few days. It seemed to pull in a few newer voices, but it also added pressure and then fizzled. I’m not sure it’s the right move long term.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the clique at all but whether people can find the new stuff?

I wandered into the off topic chat once and saw folks vent about uptime, and it reminded me energy matters more than rules. If the core group is happy but newcomers feel excluded, maybe a casual open mic post or rotating hosts could help, but I’m not convinced it would last.
