How can I mount a chartplotter on a center console without drilling?
#1
I’m trying to figure out the best way to secure my new chartplotter on the console of my center console. I’m worried the standard mounting bracket won’t handle the pounding in a real chop, but I’m hesitant to start drilling permanent holes in the fiberglass.

I get the worry. I used an edge clamp mount that grips the console and skips drilling. It holds in calm seas, but in real chop it bounces a bit; I added a thick rubber pad to bite and stopped the unit from marring the dash.

I did drill a couple of small holes to bolt a bracket, and I used a backing plate on the inside and sealant. It’s been solid for a season, though I spent the first trip bracing myself every time we hit a wake.

Do you really need the chartplotter on that exact spot, or could a temporary mount or even a handheld unit be enough? I keep asking myself if the real issue is the vibration or glare rather than the mounting choice.

I drifted off topic once, thinking about the fiberglass flex under load and whether the console would crack; but the practical thing I learned is to test in chop with a weight on the mount and see how much it shifts before committing.
