How can i move from forum threads to direct messages without feeling awkward?

I’ve been trying to build a more genuine connection with my regular posters, but moving from public threads to direct messages feels awkward and forced. How do you transition a forum relationship into a more personal one without making it weird or breaking the established community vibe?

I tried after a thread by naming a detail they shared and asking a simple follow up in a DM. It felt natural and not pushy when I kept it short and direct.

The first DM felt off to me I over explained and it stalled the back and forth. I worried it made the whole space step away from the vibe.

Maybe the real problem is not the move to DMs but the sense that engagement online has to be loud and ongoing to count.

Could a small test work where you slide into DMs only after a warm public thread and you spell out the boundary and purpose and you can live with a plain no?
