How can i move past shoulder tension in body scan meditation?
#1
I’ve been trying to use a body scan meditation to help with tension, but I keep getting stuck at my shoulders. My mind just fixates on the tightness there and I can’t seem to move my awareness down through the rest of my body smoothly. Has anyone else had this happen where one area just halts the whole practice?

Yep, I know that feeling. During a body scan I get to the shoulders and the whole thing stalls. I end up chasing the ache and my mind wanders, and suddenly I realize I skipped half the body. I tried staying with the breath and just naming the sensation there, and then letting the noticing drift downward. It helped a little, but the tension kept pulling me back.

I had a session where I kept stuck at the shoulders for weeks. I eventually paused, did a quick 30 second reset, stretched the neck in a gentle way, and came back. The next time I found I could move a bit further, but the shift was small.

Sometimes I think the real blocker is anticipation. I expect the whole practice to be smooth, so when I hit that knot I get tense and bail. One time I just let go of the idea of finishing the scan and walked through a tiny area at a time instead of whole sections.

Do you think the problem is really the shoulders or is the mind clinging to the idea of noticing the right thing? I'm not sure.
