How can I reduce phone use without feeling like I'm missing something urgent?

I’ve been trying to cut down my phone use, but every time I silence notifications, I get this anxious feeling that I’m missing something urgent or that people will think I’m ignoring them. Has anyone else found that disconnecting digitally actually creates more social pressure?

Yeah I felt that anxiety too. I silenced notifications and suddenly every ping felt urgent. I kept a rough tally in my head: I opened the phone a lot less, but the throat-tightening stayed for a while. Over time it eased a bit, though I’m not sure it ever fully goes away.

I tried it for a long weekend. The first day I kept grabbing the phone anyway. Then I found I was more present when I did finally check. The pressure didn’t disappear, it just shifted toward how I kept up with people in real life.

Do you think the problem is the phone or the pressure we put on ourselves to be always reachable?

I still catch myself worrying I’ll miss something important, even when I know there are moments I’d be better off ignoring the buzz. It feels like the social clock is always ticking.
