How can I remove my old usernames from search results when the site is gone?

I’ve been trying to scrub my old usernames from the web and hit a wall. Some old forum I forgot about still shows my profile in search results, but the site itself is gone, so I can’t delete it. How do you even begin to deal with these orphaned accounts that you can’t access anymore?

I chased this a while ago. The site was gone but the old profile still popped up in search results. I couldn't delete it because I couldn't log in or even prove it was me. I tried the search engine's removal options for outdated content, and it knocked out a few cached links, but the page kept resurfacing in results.

I eventually decided to stop chasing it every week. It lingers, then disappears for a while, then returns. It feels like a game of whack-a-mole with no finish line.

When I looked around, I noticed other sites that copied or archived bits of that profile, so I tried cleaning those forks too. It helped a bit because fewer places pointed back to the old name, but it was still not clean.

Sometimes I think the real blocker is the memory in the search index. The page might be gone, but the link's footprint in caches and sitemaps sticks around and keeps showing up in results.

Do you think the problem is mainly the search engine cache, or is there a bigger trail somewhere else I'm missing?

Once I even drifted into a tangent about old forum software I used to run, and then snapped back to reality: maybe the best you can do is minimize future exposure and accept some leftovers.
