How can I run a relaxed board game night with neighbors without feeling stiff?

I’m trying to organize a casual board game night for people in my apartment building, but I’m worried it might feel awkward or forced. How do you get a mix of neighbors who don’t really know each other to relax and actually have fun together?

I’ve done this a few times. Pick two or three quick, light games that explain in a minute, then rotate players so people aren’t stuck with the same folks all night. Put out snacks and a simple timer so a round ends on time. After the first round, throw in a 2 minute chat about a goofy topic before the next game to loosen everyone up.

I tried something similar last month. I overplanned the vibe and ended up with a couple folks just watching. A couple of neighbors did small talk about a game they loved, which helped, but most stayed quiet. I think the mood matters more than the exact games.

Do you think the barrier is people not knowing each other, or that they feel they have to perform? I keep wondering if it’s the space or the time that makes folks orbit the edges rather than jump in.

One concrete thing I did was a sprint of three rounds with two players per round before switching games. We tracked that interest dropped after the first two rounds and a few people drifted off to chat or grab another snack. We abandoned the big plan and kept it casual after that, which felt easier to sustain even if not everyone connected.
