How can I shift my graphic design portfolio to reflect my ideal niche?

I’ve been freelancing as a graphic designer for about three years, and I’m hitting a wall with my portfolio. It feels like a collection of random client work instead of showing the cohesive, editorial design style I actually want to be hired for. How do you shift your presented work toward the niche you want, especially when your past paid projects don’t reflect that direction?

I rebuilt my portfolio around an editorial vibe instead of random client cases. I picked three themes, cooked up mock editorial layouts, and bumped those to the top. Then I tucked the older projects behind a simple case-study page that explains constraints and outcomes rather than showing the visuals alone.

I’m not sure the past projects are the real blocker. Maybe I’m chasing a vibe I don’t fully own yet, and the constant pivoting just muddies the signal.

I did a concrete experiment: took three existing client pieces and redesigned them with a clean editorial grid, a restrained color system, and larger type. Then I featured those as a mini-series at the top of my site and in a PDF reel.

One friend said show the process, not just the polished look. I tried adding a short note under each piece about the approach and constraints. It helped me feel closer to the niche, but I still worry it reads like marketing rather than work.
