How can I stay connected with friends after turning off notifications?
#1
I’ve been trying to cut back on my screen time, so I turned off all non-essential notifications on my phone. But now I’m worried I’m missing important messages from my close friends because our group chat has gone quiet, and I’m starting to feel out of the loop. Has anyone else dealt with this push and pull between wanting to be less distracted and staying socially connected?

I went through the same tug. I turned off almost everything and felt oddly out of the loop. I ended up setting a fixed check-in window—15 minutes in the afternoon to scan and reply unless it felt urgent. It cut the nonstop buzz without wrecking the friendship, but I still worry I’m missing stuff once in a while.

Yeah I did something similar but with the anxiety about missed messages, I started checking the chat first thing every morning and again before bed. It kinda defeats the purpose, but at least I know what happened. The group got quieter, and I found myself replying slower.

Are we sure the problem is not just a phase in the chat, and that your friends actually want you in it in the way you expect?

I kept thinking about what being connected really means. For a couple days I drifted into and out of the chat, then wandered into something else like a bike ride or a podcast, and I still kept in touch with a few friends directly. Not perfect, but not a catastrophe either.
