How can i tell black-throated green warbler from blackburnian by their song?

I’ve been trying to get better at identifying warblers by their songs, but I keep mixing up the black-throated green and the blackburnian. Their high-pitched, buzzy notes sound so similar to my ear when I’m out in the field.

Yeah, that mix happens with warblers. I tried focusing on one short phrase and tracing it through a full loop. It helped a little, but in a windy morning the two still blurred together.

Recording helped. I grabbed quick clips, slowed them, and counted notes per burst. Blackburnian stuff came out as a faster, more fluttery sequence, while Black-throated Green sounded a bit more buzzy and even. Still not perfect, but the numbers gave me something to hang onto.

Do you hear a clear repeated phrase, or is it more of a quick buzz with changing notes?

One afternoon I found myself staring at a fern while the birds sang and it felt like nothing clicked. I’m not sure if the problem is the songs or my ear, but I kept listening for longer bursts and tried not to drift to the next bird in the hedge.
