How can i tell if therapy is making progress or just venting?
#1
I’ve been in therapy for a few months now, and I’m starting to feel like I’m just going in circles talking about my week. How do you know if you’re actually making progress or just venting? I worry that I’m not digging into the deeper patterns my therapist mentioned.

I’ve been there too. At first it felt like I just spilled the week on the couch. I started jotting one tiny change I tried each week and whether it showed up in my day afterward. Sometimes it helped me see a shift, sometimes not.

I still worry I’m just venting. When the same worry came up week after week, I asked myself what actually changed since last time. If nothing changed, I tried bringing a specific example to the next session rather than just the mood.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the pattern but whether what you’re labeling as a pattern is the thing that actually matters. Sleep, caffeine, stress, those show up too and can mask what you think you’re digging into. Have you ever had a week where the talk felt easy but the old trigger stayed the same outside?

I tried to push for a clear pattern breakthrough and got tangled in my own expectations. Some weeks I left the session with fewer answers and more questions, and that was okay too.
