How can we make mealtimes more welcoming for a student staying with us?

My family is hosting a student from abroad and I'm worried we're being too informal at mealtimes. We usually just grab food from the kitchen counter and eat in the living room, but I get the sense they might be expecting a more structured, shared table setting. I don't want our casual American routine to come across as unwelcoming.

We started eating at the table a couple nights a week, signaled it with a simple placemat and real napkins, nothing fancy. The student seemed more included when we asked about their day and what food they liked. It stayed informal but felt warmer.

For months we kept it casual and the room stayed loud and the meals felt rushed. Then we tried a quick table setup and it still didn’t click, or maybe the issue wasn’t the table at all. I keep wondering if it’s language or pacing more than seating.

Would they be comfortable with a small table and a little routine?

I get distracted thinking about the living room vibes and whether we should dim the TV or just eat with a quieter mood. Then last week we did sit at the table with actual utensils and a shared dish, and they looked surprised in a good way and stayed longer for dessert. Not sure if that was the switch or simply a good night.
