How did a modern jazz album finally click for you?

I’ve been trying to get into more modern jazz, but I keep hitting a wall where everything just sounds like background music to me. I put on a highly recommended album from a contemporary artist, and while it’s technically impressive, it doesn’t grab me or make me feel anything. Has anyone else struggled with this, and did you find a particular record or player that finally made it click?

I get that wall. For me it was less about perfecting technique and more about letting one voice carry me. Kamasi Washington The Epic finally clicked after I stuck with a few tracks that felt cinematic and had a clear melodic thread. Not every moment lands, but when it does it feels like a story, not background noise.

Another angle was something groove heavy and human. Snarky Puppy We Like It Here hit me because the band breathes together and there’s funny, urgent energy in the playing. It doesn’t pretend to be deep all the time, but the momentum pulled me in.

I tried learning a couple of phrases on my synth while listening, just to hear how a player builds a line. It was messy and short lived, but that little exercise made me notice how a solo shapes the tune, even when the album feels glossy or slick.

Do you think maybe the problem isn’t the records but how you’re listening to them? I used to listen on laptop speakers and it erased the dynamics. A nicer pair of headphones or a room with a bit of space changed what I heard, even if the music wasn’t clickling yet.
