How do i fix overlapping dialogue between a companion mod and main quest npcs?

I finally got my custom companion mod working, but now their dialogue keeps overlapping with the main quest NPCs in the same location. It’s like they’re both trying to speak at once and I can’t hear either one properly. I’m not sure if I need to adjust the audio triggers in the creation kit or if there’s a simpler script tweak I’m missing.
