How do i handle a long-time member's posts that push moderation boundaries?

I’m dealing with a situation where a long-time, generally helpful member has started posting content that’s technically within our rules but feels deliberately antagonistic. It’s creating a tense atmosphere, and I’m unsure how to address this kind of borderline behavior without seeming like I’m overreaching.

One veteran mod here I watched a longtime helper start to push tone without breaking the letter of the rules. We did a quiet message saying we want the space to stay constructive and asking if the recent posts were missing the same vibe. It cooled for a while then drifted back into tension later.

I tried a light reminder in the public feed and then we counted threads that stayed civil for a day after the post. The count barely moved but a couple of people softened their tone. It felt like a small win that did not change the current rhythm.

Maybe the vibe is coming from the topic not the person the sense that the space is too quiet and someone wants to shake it up. It feels like we fix one post and another pops up. I am not sure this is the root cause and I am not convinced the answer is control.

I would like to solve this but I keep finding myself second guessing if my approach is too soft or too blunt. I tried a private ping and got a friendly reply that what feels hostile is not intent but mood and now I am stuck.

We tried rotating the team to handle comments and set a simple no taunt rule that mirrors what we post in other rooms. It reduced the number of heated replies for a couple of days then the old style returned.
