I’ve noticed a few regular posters in our community who consistently push right up against our civility rules, but never quite cross the line into something that’s an obvious violation. It’s creating a tense atmosphere where other members are starting to disengage. How do you all handle this kind of persistent, low-level antagonism that’s hard to pin down?

We had a couple posters who stayed just under the line for months. We started tracking pattern days, times, and the threads they tended to show up in, and we kept a private log. When things started to feel tense, we reached out with a light, friendly DM to set expectations again, and asked senior members to model calmer language. It slowed the drift for a bit, but the atmosphere still felt tense.

Around once a week we post a gentle public reminder about how we want to talk here, nothing heavy, just a nudge to keep things civil. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it feels like a drop in a big ocean.

We added concrete examples to the code of conduct and made the rule about inflammatory language more visible. We also paused new threads in hot topics for a day to cool the room. It helped a little; then it started again.

Suspensions were tried, but only after repeated nudges. The turnout dipped a bit and some folks muttered that the rules were unevenly enforced. Hard to say if it was worth it, but it bought time.

I drifted into logging post times and noticed a spike around a certain hour. It felt like boundaries were being tested in bulk, then I realized it was less about the talk and more about the room's energy. Kinda demoralizing.

Do you think the real problem is tone or is it just a symptom of broader frustration with what gets upvoted?

I keep hoping a rotating moderator thing or buddy system will soften the vibe, but I’m not convinced it will fix the feel of the room. It still feels like we’re all trying to steer a moving target.
