How do i know if a data logger is worth it for formula ford and reading deltas?

I’m trying to decide if I should invest in a proper data logger for my club-level Formula Ford, but I’m not sure the cost is justified for my pace. I see the top guys reviewing their traces after every session, but I worry I won’t know how to interpret the deltas well enough to actually improve my driving.

I bought a basic data logger last year, and it just sat in the toolbox for a while. I didn’t know what to do with the deltas at first. I started simple, comparing my best lap with the rest and watching corner speeds. It took weeks, but I picked up tiny habits—braking a touch earlier into some turns, smoother throttle on exits—that showed up in the trace after a few sessions.

The cost and the time felt steep for my pace. I tried reading the plots and quickly got overwhelmed, thinking every small dip meant I needed a major change. In the end I stopped trying to chase every delta and went back to just focusing on consistency.

A real helper was a club mate who showed me how to set one target: a simple delta from fastest lap to best of the session, then just watch two or three lanes (speed, braking, throttle). We did 10 minutes after a session and kept it to what mattered for the next run. After a few weekends I could spot a pattern, though not every time.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the data, but the line you think you should be hitting or the feedback you trust. I drifted into chasing the wrong thing once and fell back on feel. Is the problem really the data or what you expect to see in it?
