How do I know if my shoulder pain is a rotator cuff issue or something else?

I’ve been dealing with persistent pain in my right shoulder for months, and my doctor mentioned it might be related to a rotator cuff issue. I’m just not sure what to make of the diagnosis since the pain isn’t constant but really flares up when I try to lift anything, even something light, away from my body.

I hear you. My own shoulder used to flare up when I tried to lift something away from my body, even light stuff. It wasn’t constant, just sudden spikes that lingered. Keeping a little journal of what moved me and what didn’t helped me notice patterns, like certain angles or grips.

Last year I was told there might be a rotator cuff issue too. I did physical therapy and followed a simple home routine with light bands. The pain eased a bit, but not enough to stop worrying about it. The doctor ordered an MRI later, and that wasn’t instantly clear either, which left me kind of stuck for a while.

One thing I want to know from you: do you have numbness or weakness in your arm, or is it mainly pain when lifting?

I found myself thinking about sleep more than I expected—how I lie on my shoulder and what pillow I use. For a while I even tested if a softer mattress helped, which sounds silly, but I kept circling back to whether the pain was actually shoulder pain or something neck-related.
