How do i make friends in a new city?
#1
I just moved here and I’m finding it surprisingly hard to meet people my own age. Everyone at work is much older or has their own families, and I’m not sure where to even start looking for local friends. How did you all break the ice when you first arrived?

I joined a weekend hiking group and a local book club. It was awkward at first, but people kept showing up and you end up chatting about the trail or the book, not some big life story. It felt slow, but it worked enough to get a few names to text.

I tried a few meetups, but most of the groups were either older or had tight friend circles. I showed up, mumbled a hello, and left before the third question about where I worked. It sucked a bit.

I asked a coworker about a weekly trivia night or a pickup soccer game, and they told me about a casual game at the park. I went once, spoke to three people, and didn't click with any of them, so I stopped going. Do you think the real problem is that I’m looking in the wrong spots?

Maybe I wandered into a bakery near the library and chatted with the barista about the local events flyer. It felt random, but the barista remembered me the next time and introduced me to a friend who was also new. It's not elegant, but it kept me from being invisible.
