How do i match two shots with different lighting using gamma or midtones?

I’m trying to get a cleaner look when I cut between two shots with slightly different lighting, and I’m never sure if I should be adjusting the gamma or the midtones in my color wheels to match them. My usual method of just tweaking the overall exposure isn't giving me the seamless blend I want.

I tried a tiny gamma tweak once to pull the midrange a bit and stop the second shot from looking flat when the lighting shifted.

Most of the time I adjust midtones first, because it feels like the gentlest lever for skin tones and for keeping walls and fabrics from drifting.

I keep thinking maybe the real issue is the lighting ratio rather than the grade, like one shot is backlit and the other is fill-heavy, which makes it feel off even after grading. Do you think the problem is the lighting ratio rather than the grade?

I once stuck with a take where the lighting matched better, but I kept a side by side with a neutral reference and noted how much the exposure differed, then moved on.
