How do I replace a porch light with a cracked globe and odd mounting bracket?
#1
My front porch light fixture has a cracked glass globe and I’m having a surprisingly hard time finding a replacement that fits. The base is an odd size and the mounting bracket seems non-standard. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of specific fixture mismatch before?

I ran into that last summer. cracked glass cover, odd base and a mounting bracket that didn’t look standard. I swung by a couple local lighting shops, measured the base diameter and hole spacing, and eventually found a match from a small maker who does nonstandard parts. It did take more time than it should.

In the end I swapped the whole fixture for a standard one with a normal mount. It felt wasteful, but it saved days of hunting and headaches worrying about weather sealing.

A friend suggested an adapter plate that lets you bolt a regular globe onto an odd bracket. We tried it, the fit was awkward and it leaked a bit in rain, so we moved on.

I did manage to snag a vintage glass shade on an online marketplace that matched the size. The seller sent measurements and it slid on with a bit of tweaking.

One more thought: sometimes the issue is the bracket bent or corroded, not the glass. Before chasing a replacement, I’d check the mounting hardware and screws.
