How do stress and environment trigger functional neurological disorder episodes?
#1
I’ve been dealing with what my doctor calls a functional neurological disorder for about a year now, and the hardest part is the unpredictable muscle weakness. One minute I’m fine, and the next my leg just won’t support me, even though all the scans come back clear. Has anyone else found that stress or even specific environments seem to trigger these episodes more than others?

Yeah I hear you. For me stress seems to ride shotgun with the episodes. During a deadline week my leg just stopped supporting me twice, then it settled down after I slept and took it easy.

Crowded places and loud environments feel like fuel for it. If I step outside or sit down somewhere quiet, the sudden weakness eases a bit.

Sometimes the weakness follows a strong emotional moment, like a big argument. Scans stay clear, which is both a relief and weird with this functional neurological disorder.

Is the problem the stress or the disorder? I flip between thinking it’s all in my head and thinking there’s something real going on, and neither view seems right.

I tried keeping a simple diary for a couple weeks, noting what happened before and after. No clear pattern, but it did help me feel less alone.

One afternoon I pushed through chores and ended up with a wobbly leg anyway. Since then I’ve tried pacing and asking for help, though progress is slow.
