How do you balance visual hierarchy with text, icons, and imagery?

I’ve been trying to improve my layout compositions, but I keep hitting a wall where everything feels either too cluttered or too sparse. I know the rule of thirds is a foundation, but I’m curious how you all handle visual hierarchy when you have multiple competing elements like text, icons, and imagery that all need to breathe.

I used to jam in more icons and text and it felt crowded. Then I kept to a grid and made two text sizes only. The images snapped to a baseline grid and icons followed a single rhythm. It was calmer, but I still nudged margins to give breaths.

I tried a hero layout where one image dominates and every other bit fades away. It failed because the copy could not stand out. I swapped that and the second emphasis now feels like it is fighting for space but at least we know what not to do.

I measured space by counting grid units between blocks and aiming for a few units of breathing room. I kept adjusting until the gaps felt natural. It helped me justify spacing decisions even when the layout still looked off to some eyes.

Do you think the real problem is not hierarchy but the language on the page and the way content speaks to itself?
