How does sleep affect rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups?
#1
I’ve been managing my rheumatoid arthritis for years, but lately I’ve noticed my flares seem to coincide with periods of really poor sleep. I’m trying to figure out if this is just a coincidence or if there’s a real connection between how I sleep and the intensity of my joint pain and stiffness the next day.

I notice the restless nights make the morning stiffness heavier.

I kept a simple log for a few weeks, marking rest quality and pain levels; results were all over the place.

I changed routine: earlier bedtime, no screens after 9, caffeine only mornings; felt less of a crash after rough nights, but not consistent.

Sometimes I wonder if the flare pattern is RA doing RA, and rest is just a side effect rather than a driver. Is this really the problem or is something else shaping both?

There were days waking up after a bad night and expecting a big flare, but the day was fine.

Tried magnesium and melatonin a couple of nights; I got a night with better rest once; didn't clear it up.

Not sure if the link is real; maybe another factor like inflammation cycles or meds are bigger drivers.
