How much will a heat pump actually reduce our carbon footprint?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if my family’s plan to install a heat pump next month is actually going to help, or if we’re just moving our energy use around. Our electricity still comes mostly from natural gas, so I’m worried our carbon footprint won’t really shrink much, even with a more efficient system.

We pulled the trigger on a heat pump last winter. Our electric bill actually dropped a bit, but the big surprise is that our carbon footprint didn’t crater the way I hoped. The grid in our area is still powered a lot by natural gas, so even with a more efficient heating method, the emissions didn’t fall as much as the bill did.

Part of me wonders if the real problem isn’t the energy mix but the house itself. We had to seal gaps and rethink attic insulation before the system could shine. Without that, I feel like we’re just moving energy around rather than cutting emissions.

I tried to track it more closely by looking at monthly heating usage versus outdoor temperature, and the pattern was messy. The savings show up on the coldest nights but then the backup heating kicks in and the numbers bounce.

Sometimes I drift to thinking about whether we’re actually reducing emissions or just paying less for heat. It’s frustrating because you want a clear win, but the math feels fuzzy.
