How useful is the Japan Rail Pass for visiting Kanazawa and Takayama?

I’m planning a trip to Japan and want to see more than just Tokyo and Kyoto, but I’m worried about getting around without speaking the language. Has anyone tried using the Japan Rail Pass to explore smaller towns like Kanazawa or Takayama? I’m curious if it’s really worth the cost for that kind of itinerary or if I’d be better off booking regional trains separately.

I did Kanazawa and Takayama with the Japan Rail Pass last spring. The long hops were easy—Tokyo to Kanazawa on the Shinkansen is smooth and signs in English on the main lines were solid. Takayama from Kanazawa is a bit of a shuffle with a transfer and a local bus, so the savings aren’t huge there, but having a single pass made the travel days feel lighter than buying separate tickets. Kanazawa town center is walkable and the city feels compact, so you don’t spend on transport once you’re there. For me it was worth it for the big travel days, less so for the day trips between small towns.

I tried a plan with separate tickets and felt the pass seemed expensive if you're not stacking long-distance days. The trains themselves are reliable, signage fine, and you’ll get by with basic Japanese or apps. The tricky part is the local buses in Takayama and some smaller stations where English isn’t common. If your itinerary is Kanazawa plus Takayama plus a couple of other places, you might save by buying specific point-to-point tickets for those stretches and using a regional rail pass only on the longer hops.

Do you actually need language at all, or are English signage and apps enough for the routes you care about? In my trip I found big stations had folks who could point you to the right platform, but once you’re on a smaller line or a local bus the help dries up. I carried a tiny phrasebook and a map offline, and that helped more than I expected.

Sometimes I wonder if the problem is really the transport or the plan. I drifted off topic toward Shirakawa-go and then back to trains. The idea of connecting Kanazawa to Takayama makes sense on paper, but you’ll lose time if you aren’t flexible with your days. I kept a couple of backup days for bad weather and ended up needing them.
