Should home office renovations be deductible for my consulting business?

I’m trying to figure out if I can deduct the cost of my home office renovation for my consulting business. I converted a spare bedroom into a dedicated workspace last year, which included built-in shelving and new wiring, but I’m not sure if this qualifies as a direct business expense or if it’s just a home improvement.

I did something like that last year. The built in shelving and the new wiring were clearly for the workspace, so I treated them as direct expenses tied to that room. I kept receipts and claimed them against my business income for the year. It felt right in the moment.

From what I remember, you can split it: the part that only benefits the workspace can be taken as a direct deduction; improvements that benefit the whole house get prorated. If you own the home, you can depreciate the business-use portion of the improvements over several years; if you rent, depreciation isn’t available, but you can still deduct the operating costs proportionally.

Do you use the space exclusively for your consulting work and on a regular basis?

I tried to separate personal and business space, and there were times it got used for guests, which made me hesitate to claim the full amount. It was not always clear in my records, so I kept the receipts just in case and wished I had kept better notes.
