Should i ask to move our group chat to direct messages without breaking vibe?

I’ve been talking to someone in a group chat for months and we really click, but I’m worried that asking to move our conversations to direct messages might change the easygoing dynamic we have. It feels like stepping over an invisible line in our online friendship, and I don’t want to make things awkward for everyone else in the channel.

I went through this too. We had months in a group chat and the vibe was easy. I eventually slid into a DM after a couple hints and the switch didn’t wreck the tone; everyone just kept joking around.

The worry is legit. That group rhythm, the public jokes, it feels fragile to change the channel. I kept waiting and nothing happened, but it rattled me.

I tried a soft approach once, said I enjoyed chatting and asked if they'd be open to a private chat. It froze for a beat, then we kept rolling in the group. Not a clean win, but no disaster either.

Question: could it be that the actual problem is not the private chat but whether you want more depth from one person or just a good vibe with the whole group?
