Should i choose 120v or 240v for home ev charging?

I’m trying to figure out if I can get by with just the 120V outlet in my garage for my new EV, or if I really need to install a 240V line. My daily commute is only about 25 miles, so plugging in overnight seems like it should cover it, but I’m worried about those days when I have to make a few extra trips and the slower charging won’t top it up in time.

I started with a 120V outlet in the garage for my EV. It adds about 3 to 5 miles per hour of charging, so overnight I could usually cover a 25 mile commute. If I had a couple of extra trips I’d wake up with a lower range than I wanted.

On days when I actually did errands beyond the commute, the 120V wasn’t enough. I’d have to start the day with a higher state of charge or hope for a late top‑up.

Do you really need those extra trips every day, or could you top up at a public charger or on weekends?

I eventually installed a 240V line after a few months. It cuts charging time a lot and gives me breathing room for extra trips.
