Should I drop to 1080p or upgrade my graphics card sooner for 1440p?

I just upgraded to a 1440p monitor and my old GTX 1070 is really struggling to keep up in newer titles, even on low settings. I'm trying to decide if I should just lower the resolution back to 1080p for now, which looks blurry, or start saving for a new graphics card much sooner than I planned.

I did something similar last month. Dropped to a 1080p test and the blur was real after the bigger panel. Frame times got steadier, but the visuals still bothered me, so I kept tinkering with in game options and saved for a proper upgrade.

I wonder if it’s not just the GPU. I noticed some games were maxing out the CPU or getting stutter from background tasks. I closed a few apps, checked temps, and the improvement felt small. It didn’t feel like a clean GPU fix.

I started planning an upgrade but I’m not sure what to buy. Price-to-performance guides help, but you can’t compare a used card easily. I considered an RTX 40-series or a current gen, but the numbers keep changing and I keep delaying.

I keep thinking the real issue might be the monitor scaling or the way some engines render at high res, not just raw horsepower. It makes me second-guess whether I’m chasing the wrong symptom. Do you actually see the GPU at full tilt in the games, or is it more of a steady chug with little spikes?
