Should I go 1440p or 4K for gaming with high refresh rates?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, and I’m stuck on whether the higher pixel density is worth the performance hit in the games I play. My GPU can handle 4K, but I’m worried about consistently hitting high refresh rates without turning settings down too much.

I stuck with 1440p and a fast panel for a long while. I could max textures and shadows and still hit solid frame rates, so motion stayed smooth without chasing tiny gains.

4K is amazing in the cinematic moments, but in most AAA titles I had to dial back some settings to stay above a comfy FPS, even with a strong GPU. Worth it for the detail in the scenes, not always for the rest.

Maybe the real bottleneck isn’t the resolution at all. Have you measured frametimes in a few titles to see if the issue is frame pacing rather than pixels?

I bounce back and forth depending on the game. If it’s fast action, 1440p tends to feel snappier; if it’s a story-rich title with big vistas, 4K is tempting even if it’s not always pushing 144 Hz.
